In this episode, Yael Sunshine talks about her struggle being parent of two children that were addicted to drugs and how ashamed and helpless she felt. She explains the bind she was in because on one hand she was an enabler, trying to ‘fix it’ for her kids. On another hand, she knew she needed to make some really tough decisions in order to help them overcome the addiction. Ultimately, she had to kick her daughter out of her house in order to encourage her to get the help that she needed. She felt if she didn’t do it, her daughter was going to die. Taking this very tough position, with a daughter that she loves very much, was extremely difficult for her. However, she knew it had to be done.
Yael also talks about coming to the realization that she needed help too. She felt that her kids addiction to drugs was ‘all her fault’ and that she was a horrible parent. She explains how she was filled with so much self-blame and shame that it became debilitating. She realized that she can’t control or fix her children. They had to do it themselves – just as she had to deal with what was coming up for her through this difficult time in her life.
Yael describes her struggle with feelings of profound despair and helplessness. She finally decides to join Al-Anon, taking almost 2 years to get through the first step which includes admitting you are powerless. Tune in and hear how she made the shift from resistant to persistent!
